Ensuring the best outcomes for councils and their communities
MWRRG is working with councils in Melbourne’s south east on the biggest tender Melbourne has seen for new infrastructure to process household rubbish.
This unique tender is taking a collaborative design approach, focusing on the interests of councils and their communities.
To make sure this can happen, no technology or site has been selected yet. Instead of specifying the technology solutions in the expression of interest process, MWRRG invited companies to propose their technology solution/s for the councils’ consideration.
During the next stage of the tender process the councils and shortlisted companies will work through the solutions and analyse which will deliver the best environmental, economic and social outcomes for the community.
The process has been designed to empower the councils to develop a solution suitable for their needs while being flexible enough to consider any advances in technology and build on industry’s experience in delivering solutions.
Councils and the shortlisted tenderers will be working together on solution development over the next 10 months, with councils making the final technology decision in late 2021. It is expected that a 20 to 25 year contract will be awarded by 2022, with construction starting in 2023.
No matter what technology is selected, best outcomes will be achieved by minimising our waste, reusing and recycling. What is left over can go to advanced waste processing rather than being buried in the ground.
