Litter Hotspots: My Mullum Mullum Creek

Maroondah City Council received two rounds of Litter Hotspots funding to improve the water quality of the Mullum Mullum and Taralla Creeks by reducing litter and dog poo on two popular recreational parks using community engagement, infrastructure and enforcement. In both projects, the council established relationships with key internal (Local Laws, Animal Management Officers) and external stakeholders, conducted community workshops to engage and educate users of the recreational parks, nearby residents and businesses.
Litter bins at key points along the trail and signage at park entrances were installed to improve personal responsibility for litter and dog poo. Communication materials were distributed to local dog obedience clubs, schools and businesses. clubs, schools and businesses. clubs, schools and businesses. Monitoring activities to measure impact and changes were also undertaken.
Overall key achievements from these project included:
- 88% reduction in littered dog droppings
- 61% reduction in litter
- 83% increase in bin volume.
