Litter Hotspots: Caring for Corio Bay

Bellarine Catchment Network

Caring for Corio Bay was a multi-partnership alliance project focused on coordinating and integrating awareness, infrastructure and enforcement activities to reduce litter and improve water quality in Corio Bay. Bellarine Catchment Network created an alliance of community groups, government agencies and private businesses working within the Corio Bay catchment to coordinate their efforts to reduce general litter, sediments and nutrients entering the bay. This project was a finalist in the 2017 Victorian Landcare Awards (Coastcare Category), and the 2017 Victorian Regional Achievement and Community Awards.

Key achievements from this project included:

  • more than 1,400 participants involved across 37 events
  • 22 new partnerships established
  • more than 3,600 cigarette butts collected.

    The 'Be A Local Hero' campaign posters feature wildlife local to the Bellarine Peninsula. The posters are designed to raise awareness and educate the community about the impacts of litter in their environment.

    The 'Be A Local Hero' bin wraps and stickers were designed to make bins more attractive and engaging by featuring wildlife local to the Bellarine Peninsula.
