Closed landfill assessment tool published

The Local Council Self-Assessment Tool for Closed Landfill Environmental Risk has been published by Environment Protection Authority Victoria (EPA). The tool provides a consistent statewide approach to identifying the risks of closed landfills. Councils are encouraged to use the tool for sites that do not currently have an EPA licence or notice.

The tool is designed as a simple desktop assessment. A site can be assessed in as little as an hour, with the results providing a snapshot of the possible risk that a closed landfill may have on the wider environment. It has been trialled by both regional and metropolitan councils in Victoria.

Although use of the tool is voluntary, it is suggested that the results (particularly ones that indicate moderate to high risk) be discussed with your local EPA contact.

The tool was developed by the Loddon Mallee Waste and Resource Recovery Group and EPA North West in response to the release of the Victorian Auditor-General’s Office report on managing landfills in September 2014.

MWRRG is providing support to regional waste and resource recovery groups, councils and EPA to ensure that the recommendations of the Victorian Auditor-General’s Office report are acted upon.

More information on the Local Council Self-Assessment Tool for Closed Landfill Environmental Risk can be found on the EPA’s website.
