Clean Up Australia Day 2016
MWRRG was proud to participate in Business Clean Up Day again this year. On Tuesday 1 March we joined forces with colleagues from Sustainability Victoria and the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning to pick up litter from the banks of the Yarra, near the Webb Bridge in Docklands.
Recently there has been a lot of media coverage of the damage litter can do in the marine environment. Seeing such a large volume of litter on the banks of the Yarra ready to be swept out into Port Phillip Bay really brought home the importance of initiatives such as the successful Litter Hotspots program to prevent litter from entering our waterways. Applications have just closed for round one of the Sustainability Victoria managed Litter Innovation Fund - we are eager to discover the exciting projects sure to be funded through this program.
Cleaning up in an area with such high foot traffic was a great way to start conversations with community members about Clean Up Australia Day ahead of the big event (which occurred on Sunday March 6). It was great to hear conversations between passers-by about the importance of cleaning up litter, and there were many people interested enough to stop for a chat about what we were doing.
If you weren’t able to participate on the day, you can still visit the Clean Up Australia Day website to find out other ways to get involved.
