Alternatives to landfill—knowledge building in the north west
A seminar series for councils in the north west of Melbourne is helping to build knowledge about alternative solutions to landfill, within the context of Recycling Victoria: a new economy. Featuring industry and government experts, the seminars—delivered by MWRRG—will assist councils to make informed, locally appropriate decisions about waste and recycling options for their communities.
Officers from Banyule, Brimbank, Darebin, Hobsons Bay, Hume, Maribyrnong, Melbourne, Melton, Moonee Valley, Moreland, Nillumbik, Port Phillip, Whittlesea, Wyndham, and Yarra City councils have attended the first two sessions, covering:
- the procurement process being implemented by the advanced waste processing (AWP) procurement in Melbourne’s south east
- AWP technologies used globally
- local AWP technology developments.
A third and final session—featuring Heather Grasby, MWRRG’s new Director Major Projects, speaking about the European AWP experience—will be held later this month.
Josephine Regel, Director Operations, Planning and People says the seminars explore options preferable to landfill on the hierarchy of waste and recycling.
“We’re really pleased to be sharing our expertise with these councils. It’s one of the many ways we’re working with councils to help them reduce waste to landfill,” Josephine said.
